The report, commissioned by the UK government and compiled by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SCAN), recommends that people eat no more than 2.5 oz of red meat a day or 1 pound per week. They warn that any more than that will increase the risk of colon cancer by one-third.
Two-and-a-half ounces of meat is the equivalent of three small pieces of bacon or one piece of sausage. Most people who eat meat have a hard time controlling their intake of the stuff so its looking like it would be better for people just to go veg.
This may not change people’s behavior right away, but its definitely a study we should all keep in our arsenal. Pull this one out at a party this weekend in a very nonchalant way and see if you can get the guests talking.
